Tips to help the AC cool your home better

The new generation of AC systems provide better temperature and humidity control. If used correctly and maintained properly, they are also more energy efficient and will provide years of smooth service without escalating your power bills.

The first step is to buy an AC of the right size, right tonnage and with the right energy star rating as it affects the energy consumption. Next, ensure that your AC installation has been done correctly, at the correct height and on the correct wall for providing efficient cooling. Finally maintain and use the AC unit, optimally and smartly. A well-maintained air conditioner consumes less energy and helps you control your power bills to a large extent.

Here are a few tricks and tips that will significantly help to curb your power bills in the long run:

Turn off the AC when not in use

Make sure you turn off the AC before leaving your home. Otherwise, you can set timer to start the AC just half an hour before you are due to reach home. This will keep your home cool and inviting.

Set the right temperature

You can set the temperature to about 25 degree Celsius. This cools the room faster and also helps to reduce running costs by around 6 to 8 percent. Anything lower will not provide efficient cooling. In the effort to provide sufficient cooling it will end up consuming more power.

Rearrange furniture in the room

Set furniture in your home that obstructs the AC vents so that the cool air flows freely throughout the room.

Keep doors and windows closed

Keep the doors and windows closed when the AC is on. Avoid opening and closing the doors frequently to prevent the cool air from escaping the room. Prevent direct sunlight from entering the room. Use curtains, blinds and shades to keep the room cool. To prevent any leakage of air, check for spaces around the doors and windows and weather-strip them at the earliest.

It is also highly recommended to check for holes in the seal between the window frame and air conditioner to prevent any leakage of air. The seal may lose its grip over a period of time because of the moisture. Ensure that it is not loose.

Turn off lights and exhaust fan in the room

Turn extra lights off to reduce the heat level in the room so that the AC has to work that much less. Switch on the AC before it gets too hot, so that it does not have to overwork to cool the air. Turn off the exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom when the AC is on, so that the cool air is not sucked away.

Turn on the fan

Keeping the fan on helps to circulate the AC’s cool air throughout the room.

Clean the AC filters and check for repairs

A dusty filter also reduces the air flow. Clean the filters at every fortnight, so that it remains free of allergens and other air-borne pollutants. A clean filter also reduces the power costs by 5 to 15 percent.

Get it serviced

A good quality AC unit is designed to perform well for at least 10 years. If you feel that your AC is not cooling sufficiently, have it inspected and serviced by experts. Even if the AC is performing well, it is recommended to get it maintained regularly by qualified technicians. This helps to keep the AC coils, filters, drain channels, vents, hoses and other components clean.

The AC has now become an indispensable household appliance just like the washing machine and the refrigerator. Opt for an extended warranty with a professional AC services company after the initial warranty period from the manufacturer expires. A well maintained unit reduces major servicing costs and also helps to keep the electricity bills low. Following these simple measures will go a long way in keeping your air conditioner in optimum working condition for years to come.
