Earlier this year, Samsung launched the latest MU Series of 4K TVs that includes the 6 and 7 series. These are a mix of mid-range to high-end TVs with flat panel as well as curved designs. All these TVs are available in different size variants right from 40 inches to more massive 75 inch models. Talking about the Samsung MU6470, it’s a flat panel TV with HDR+ support. The MU6470 is priced at Rs. 139,900*. Why should one go for the Samsung 55-inch TV when there are smaller size variants available at low price? Let’s check it out.

Design

The Samsung MU6470 is available in three size variants - 49, 55 and 65 inches. The one we are reviewing is the 55-inch model. It is large enough for decent sized room and should match your home aesthetics. The TV looks similar to the Samsung KU6470. The screen size, bezel type and the TV stand are more or less similar. The TV is slim and sleek in design. It has a plastic build all over and is surrounded with a thin metal bezel. It is silver in colour and roughly measures a centimetre. This makes the TV look premium.

The branding is embossed at the front center of the TV. At the bottom are the two speaker grills placed close to one another. The back panel of the TV has a brush-finished texture and is pretty clean. There is no much happening at the back. All the ports are aligned on the right and are easily accessible.

The TV comes with a polished Y-shaped stand that makes the TV look stylish. It is strong and sturdy enough to hold the weight of the TV. However, its Y-shape alignment takes a lot of space. The Samsung MU6470 4K TV is bundled along with a Smart remote. It’s a curved remote with a hard-plastic build. This remote has a Voice search button on it, which was missing earlier. Besides a few small rubberized buttons, there is a small rubberized disc for navigation and two trigger-like buttons to control volume and TV channels. This makes controlling or accessing content very easy.

Features

The Samsung MU6470 is a 4K Smart TV that has a resolution of 3840 x 2160. It runs on a quad-core processor that should help the OS run smoother and load apps faster. The Samsung MU6470 supports HDR+. We all have heard of HDR in many Full HD and 4K TVs these days. TV manufacturers claim that HDR helps improve picture quality by optimizing colour, brightness, sharpness and contrast levels.

Talking about the interface, it is quite simple and appealing. All the menus and settings are neatly organized. The MU6470 runs the latest Tizen operating system. There are a very few apps installed such as NetFlix, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Box TV and a web browser. All these should be sufficient to keep you entertained for hours. There is a Samsung app store from where you can download apps of your choice and interest. There is a Samsung Smart Hub that help searching and accessing content much easier. You get all the content at one place, in a single click.

auto-detection

The Samsung MU6470 supports auto-detection feature that recognises external devices when connected to the TV in no time. It automatically displays the name of a device when connected. Like other TV’s, you can connect your smartphone or a tablet to the TV using the Samsung Smart View app. With the help of this app, you can stream photos, videos and movies from your phone whenever needed. The app is available for Android and iOS devices. If you have more Samsung Smart TVs at home, you can easily control them using this app. The TV supports Wi-Fi Direct, where you can connect your phone, tablet or a hard drive wirelessly.

In terms of connectivity, the Samsung MU6470 4K Smart TV has three HDMI ports and two USB ports. Among the three HDMI ports, one supports ARC. HDMI ARC is meant to create one connection between the audio device and the TV. The Samsung MU6470 also supports CEC, this helps in controlling all the HDMI devices connected to the TV using a single TV remote. There is also a USB and Bluetooth HID support which lets you connect a wireless mouse, keyboard or a game controller to the TV. This is useful when you want to connect more devices to the TV but without using additional USB ports.

Other connectivity options include Composite, Component, Digital Audio Out, LAN port, etc. Besides this, the Samsung MU6470 supports a ConnectShare feature which lets you copy content from one drive to another without having to use a laptop or PC. In terms of audio, the TV speakers are powered at 160W. This should help deliver loud sound.

Performance

The Samsung MU6470 greets the viewer with a short transition effect when you first power on the TV. The interface of the TV is neatly organized and the latest version of Tizen operating system comes preinstalled. It is simple and easy to use. The TV is bundled with a smart remote and pairing it is very fast. Pressing the Home button gives access to the Samsung Smart Hub where you can find recommended apps and popular content, in one place. Besides it, there are quick settings and a source option.

To test the picture quality, we viewed some 4K sample photos and played some Blu-ray quality movies. The TV offers great picture quality. The colours were bright and very impressive. Pictures and movies had good details and the saturation levels were pretty decent. Even the fast moving objects in the movies appeared sharp with saturated colours. The black and white levels were amazing. There are four picture modes to choose from - Dynamic, Standard, Natural and Movie. By default, the TV was set to a Standard mode. The viewing angles were decent and watching the TV from a close distance is still great.

HDR

Like other TVs, there are expert picture settings besides the usual to help the picture look ideal. The Samsung MU6470 supports HDR+. Samsung claims this technology is to implement natural looking colours and helps in differentiating background objects in the image. There is hardly any HDR content available online and is difficult to find. We finally managed to get Life of Pi, a 4K HDR video and played it on the TV with HDR+ mode on and off. With HDR+ mode on, we noticed that the video look brighter than before. Li of Pi is a CG based movie and there are some scenes with bright blue and green colours in it. With HDR+ on, we noticed a greenish blue tint added. Another interesting fact about the Samsung MU6470 is, when you play any HDR content on the TV, it automatically sets to HDR+ mode.

There’s a 360 degree icon in the right corner of the TV screen, which is noticeable only when your play videos on the TV. It was disabled at first, hoping it would only work for specific photos and videos. We downloaded a few panoramic photos and videos, but the 360 degree feature was still disabled.

The TV supports voice commands too. The first time you start using the TV, it guides you with how to use them. It takes very little time to run through voice iteration process. You can search for apps or content to play using voice commands. There are a very few apps such as Live TV, NetFlix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, App Store and web browser installed. All of these should be enough to keep you entertained. With the help of Live TV, you can broadcast TV programs, schedule them and record them. Also, there is a “Favourite list” where you can store content that you watch regularly and interest you. For more apps, the Samsung App store comes with a wide range of content including news, sports, weather and games. You can browse through and download apps of your interest. You can easily move apps or remove them if you like.

The MU6470 4K Smart TV detects external devices very fast. It displays the name of devices connected, on top of the screen. If you have content stored on your phone, streaming it with the help of the Samsung Smart View app is quite simple. When we tested it, there wasn’t any problem connecting the phone to the Samsung TV. Even streaming content was smooth.

The sound quality of this TV is not very impressive. We had to set the volume to maximum for loud and clear sound. One thing we liked is that you get an audio equaliser on this TV. For example, if you want more bass while watching action movies, you can set it accordingly. One of the interesting features was the Samsung Smart Remote. The curved design was easy to hold and with very few buttons on it, it’s easy to use. We tried using it on the web browser to see how intuitive it was. Scrolling through news feed and browsing was very easy using this remote.

Verdict

The Samsung MU6470 is a 4K Smart TV that is beautifully designed to match your home aesthetics. The TV offers top-notch picture quality and supports HDR+. We found it more identical to the Samsung 50-inch KU6000 4K TV that we reviewed earlier. If you are purely looking for a Samsung TV with great picture quality and don’t mind compromising size, the Samsung 50-inch KU6000 is what we would suggest you. The MU6470 4K Smart TV is equipped with the latest operating system which is interesting and easy to use. Like other 4K TVs, the Samsung MU6470 comes with smart features such as Screen Mirroring, Voice Search and Auto-detection of external devices. The Samsung MU6470 is priced too high at Rs. 139,900*. Samsung would have been better in terms of sound quality for this TV. It wasn’t very impressive.

If you are purely looking for a large screen and don’t want to compromise on the picture quality, the Samsung MU6470 is what we would recommend. For a smaller screen variant, the Samsung  UE49MU6470UXXU is what you can look for.

  1. Your review only confuse peoples. You should specify complete product code, including continent (UN/US) and screen diagonal. For example UE40MU6470 has VA panel while UE49MU6470 has an ADS panel (advanced PLS), those panels have completely different characteristics.
