4K TVs have been long-touted as being the future of home entertainment. What sells TVs today are the high resolution displays with smart features, slim and sleek designs that match the aesthetics of our homes. 4K TVs are brilliant for their colours and details because of their higher resolution and improved panel technologies. 4K TVs used to be quite expensive and cost several lacs. It was difficult to find 4K content as well. The prices for these TVs are dropping and they are becoming affordable. Also, there is a wide collection of 4K content now available on Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Video, and other sources. The situation has improved and owning a 4K TV and watching 4K content on it is no longer a dream. Samsung, one of the well-known and trusted brands has introduced the KU6000 4K Smart TV. The TV is present in 40, 43, 50 and 60-inch variants. The TV which we are reviewing is the 50-inch one. The Samsung 50-inch KU6000 4K sells at around Rs. 115,500*, but it isn’t the only 4K TV priced in this range. The KU6000 sounds like it has everything you would want in a good 4K TV. Let’s find out if it is worth spending on the 50-inch KU6000, when there are similarly sized 4K TVs at lower prices.

Features

The UE50KU6000 is a 50-inch Smart 4K TV that runs a resolution of 3840 x 2160. The large screen size and high resolution should both help offer sharp and detailed pictures. Samsung claims that its latest PurColour technology should results in natural and realistic colours. This TV features HDR Premium technology where Samsung promises to offer sharp details in bright and dark scenes.

Talking about the interface of this Smart TV, it is quite simple and responsive. Also, the latest Tizen OS has some changes and appears more appealing. All the menus and settings are well organized into different categories, so it’s easy to access. There are a limited number of apps, but those should satisfy your daily needs. The app store has different categories such as What’s New, Popular, Video, Lifestyle, etc. Browsing through these categories, you should find there is something for everyone’s taste and interests. The TV is powered by a powerful quad-core processor and that helps the OS run smoothly. This is helpful when you are streaming content, multi-tasking, playing games, etc.

The Samsung KU6000 also hosts some additional features. You can perform screen mirroring and stream content from your phone or a tablet to the TV. Besides this, Samsung’s Smart View app lets you share videos, photos and pictures on the big screen from your phone which might be helpful during family gatherings, birthday parties and so on. In addition, there is a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) feature which lets you multi-task. This is useful when you are busy but don’t want to miss out your favourite TV shows or programs.

In terms of connectivity, there are plenty of options, wired and wireless. The TV comes with three HDMI and two USB ports. HDMI can be used to connect a set-top box, gaming console or a laptop to the TV. Also, the two USB ports are sufficient to connect external devices such as your mobile phone, pen drive or hard drive.

Most of the other connections are the same and consist of a Composite, Component and a Digital Audio Out. You can also connect your TV to a router using W-Fi or using a LAN cable. It also supports Wi-Fi Direct where you can connect your smartphone, tablet or a hard drive wirelessly. In terms of audio, the TV has down-firing speakers powered at 20W which most TVs today have.

Design and Build

The design of the Samsung UE50KU6000 is sleek and simple. It resembles Samsung’s 6 series of Smart TVs. The 50-inch screen size is large enough for most rooms and the design suits most home aesthetics. The TV has a thin bezel that roughly measures roughly a centimetre and stands out well. Like most TVs in the LED TV segment, Samsung has positioned the speakers at the bottom of the TV.

The TV has a plastic build all around. There is a power indicator at the bottom right corner of the TV while the Samsung logo is embossed at the centre. On the back, is a small directional pad which lets you access settings on the TV. Talking about the connectivity options, all the ports are aligned on the right and are easily accessible. Most of the connectivity options are more or less the same as those found on Smart TVs today.

The TV comes with a V-shaped stand that looks stylish and is good if you plan on placing the TV on a table. The TV comes bundled with two remote controls - standard and smart. The standard remote has nothing unique about its design. We used the smart remote while testing this TV and found it to be quite responsive. It has a curved remote made-up of hard plastic and has a combination of plastic and rubber buttons on it. It has a very few buttons on it and they are all aligned with sufficient spacing between them.

Also, there is a small circular dial in the center which doubles as a directional keypad. There are two small analogue pedal-like controls, one for volume and the other for channels that are sensitive to pressure. This helps make adjusting settings really easy.

Performance

The first thing we noticed when we started reviewing the Samsung UE50KU6000 was its interface. It is really simple to use and responsive. The TV loaded files and folders with ease and there was no lag noticed. Samsung’s new Tizen operating system has all the options and settings, well-organised and easily accessible, without having to navigate away from the screen you are on.

We first tested the performance of the TV by watching some 4K videos and photos using a pen drive. The colour and the sharpness of the images was stunning. We didn’t need to make a lot of picture changes to make it look good. By default, the TV was set to Natural profile and the colour saturation was very high. We switched to the Standard profile as a starting point, and decreased the brightness and sharpness a few notches till the picture looked natural. We also had to tone down the reds a tiny bit. Once fully setup, the picture quality is really something. The TV offers top-notch quality, thanks mostly to the excellent detail, good colour rendition and contrast ratios. Also, images with dark backgrounds and shadows appeared clear and detailed in areas where other TVs showed weren’t.

True 4K

While watching 4K videos, we noticed no blurring in fast-motion clips; they were clear and smooth. We also connected a laptop to the TV using a HDMI cable that not only gave us more options to tweak the picture quality but also a chance to gauge the performance of the TV with external sources. The changes we made resulted in a near-perfect picture. The one sore point we noticed after all the tweaks was that was the viewing angles were average at best. The picture wasn’t clear and appeared pale and greyish when viewed from the sides. This means you have to view this TV right from the front, with minimal deviation. We tried setting the TV back to its default settings and that the viewing angles didn’t improve.

We also connected this TV to a router which took a few seconds. We used the web browser to load a number of tabs on it and found the performance to be satisfactory. Pages loaded smoothly and there was no delay in switching between tabs. Besides this, we also streamed content from the smartphone to the TV using the Cast option. The connection was quick and all the videos played very well. Talking about the audio quality, the built-in speakers are decent but not great. There wasn’t any distortion while playing songs and music videos at very high volumes. There are few options to tweak the audio quality and the audio is fine for small rooms. If you are considering this TV for large rooms or halls, consider investing in a good audio setup.

The interesting bit of course was the smart remote of this TV. There are few buttons on this remote, all spaced out evenly. It’s easy to use and you won’t keep pressing the wrong buttons. This remote also acts as a motion remote which is of great use while playing games or if you want scroll through small options and menus on the web browser.

Verdict

The Samsung UE50KU6000 Smart 4K TV offers all the features that you would expect in a high-end TV. The large screen and design make it feel like home. It is priced at Rs. 115,500* and is among the affordable models when compared to other 4K TVs with similar designs and features. The TV has top-notch picture quality except for a few things like the viewing angles. It also offers smart features such as online streaming, screen mirroring, multi-room link and decent audio performance. If you are really looking for a large, performance 4K TV with features at a moderate price, the Samsung UE50KU6000 can be easily recommended.
