Features of the all-new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset

Qualcomm introduced it latest flagship Snapdragon 845 processor in December last year, and we’re soon going to get a glimpse of the processor in real life. There are plenty of devices on the horizon and they are going to be hitting our shelves soon. However, with new technologies like AR and VR coming to smartphones, we can only be curious about what the latest generation of the flagship processor has to offer. So, till we get to see these devices, let’s get an idea of what we can expect from our smartphones.

Peak performance

Performance upgrades are sort of mandatory with every generation of processors and the Snapdragon 845 is no exception. The new processor is built on the same architecture as it predecessor. It features eight cores, four of which are high performance cores for handling heavy tasks and four being efficiency cores to save battery. However, Qualcomm still claims that the processor can perform 25 – 30 per cent better than the older variant, while still consuming 30 per cent less energy. Above that, the processor also supports Quick charge 4+, which can charge the phone up to 50 per cent in just 15 minutes. Of course these are still claims form the Qualcomm. The real life performance might differ, depending on the device and manufacturer. However, going by the numbers, even a small amount of performance boost should substantially improve your experience with heavy applications.

Intelligent AI

Artificial intelligence has been the focus of Qualcomm only in the last two years and in that time it seems to have advanced a lot. The Snapdragon should serve as a great leap with how we operate AI on out smartphones. Thanks to a new framework, Qualcomm claims the processor to run AI based tasks three time faster compared to its predecessor. Besides that, the Snapdragon 845 will also help introduce different ways to use AI with new and existing applications. Some of the features we’re looking at include a better face recognition system, better bokeh effects on the camera and even voice recognition. You can also expect smarter responses in a realistic conversational manner.

Next level imaging

Camera performance on smartphones has improved a lot in the last two years, but with the Snapdragon 845, it is going to reach new heights. For the new processor, Qualcomm has been working on Spectra 280 ISP, the second generation of their own image signal processor. The new ISP shifts the focus from resolution to capturing more colour depth. They have done this by increasing the colour gamut and luminance. The result of this will get you more natural looking tones across a single colour and better exposure in different lighting conditions.

Realistic VR and AR

The new processors comes with the latest Adreno 630 GPU (Graphics processing unit). It is not only said to improve overall media performance by 30 per cent, but also brings in new AR and VR experience. For VR applications, the processor supports room tracking, thanks to its 6-DoF and SLAM support. This means you’d be able to move around in your room and get the same movement in the virtual environment. There’s also better image and voice rendering to help make virtual simulations seem more real.

Vault-type security

The Snapdragon 845 processor comes with a new ‘Secure processing unit’. The unit comes with its own processor, memory and power. Qualcomm calls it ‘its own secure island’. It adds a third layer of security by storing your biometric data. So in an unfortunate event, if someone tries to exploit your smartphone, it will be impossible for them to crack it through other parts of the processor.

Faster networking

The Snapdragon 845 processor comes with Qualcomm’s second generation gigabit LTE modem, called the X20. It can offer up to 20 per cent faster real-time speeds compared to the older X16 modem that was featured in the previous variant. It should be fast enough to download large chunks of the data in minutes on cellular network. The modem also supports the new Wi-Fi 802.11 ad technology. It’s more of an add-on to Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, where it can theoretically boost speeds up to 4.6 Gbps. It’s as good as sharing 4k movies in a matter of seconds.

From the looks of it, the Snapdragon 845 will have very big impact on flagship Android smartphones. Almost every high-end smartphone is said to carry the processor. List of brands includes, LG, Sony, Xiaomi, HTC, Motorola and even Google.
