Understanding Types

Tablets are available in range of screen sizes, starting from portable 7 inch models to large 12 inch ones. Based on how the industry has shaped up over the years, choosing the screen size also helps determines the type of tablet you need and even the hardware it comes with. All you need to know is what you plan on using the tablet for. Portable tablets These tablets generally feature a screen size of 7 or 8 inches. They are portable enough to even fit in a pant pocket. More than laptops, tablets are replacements for smartphones, mostly because they can do anything a smartphone can do, including making calls and sending text messages. Most portable tablets come with a SIM card slot. Besides just being a larger smartphone, portable tablets also make great e-book readers. They are good for watching movies since most of them carry a full HD screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. 7-inch tablets also make great gaming devices for kids because of the plethora of games available on the Google Play Store and Apple App store. Portable tablets are generally cheap, starting from just Rs. 7,000*. However, they also sport basic hardware and low-end screens. That still makes them good for casual use but they aren’t dependable for intensive work-related apps.

Big screen tablets and convertibles

These tablets generally range from 9 inches to 12 inches and higher. Compared to portable tablets, you get much better looking screens running higher resolutions of 2048 x 1536. Bigger screens, hands down makes for better movie and gaming experience. Above that, the 4:3 aspect ratio and high-resolution screen also makes these tablets great for web-browsing and reading e-books. Because of thinner bezels these tablets are also becoming more portable and lighter to use in one hand. Big screen tablets also feature high-end processors and more RAM similar to the ones found on flagship smartphones. They are powerful enough to run video editing software and heavy games with ease. Some manufacturers also provide a keyboard attachment which makes them great for typing applications. On the other hand, some also come with their own active stylus that are preferred for designing and sketching applications. These ones offer much higher-pressure sensitivity to give you an experience close to as drawing on paper. Big-screen tablets can be expensive but the additional features make it worth the price.

Choosing the right Operating system

iOS

iPads run Apple’s iOS. The latest version is iOS 11 which came built with a lot of features specifically designed for iPads. Apple is trying to make the software look more like macOS. Plenty of features have been added, including split-screen and drag and drop options. The operating system is easy to use. iOS is also the only operating system that designs apps specifically for iPads. Overall, iPads are great devices. They feature good designs and hardware that goes very well with iOS. You also get access to latest OS updates instantly, which is great. However, the options are limited and you have to pay a bit more, even for an iPad mini. iPads are generally great for working professionals, especially the 10-inch variants.

Android

Unlike iOS, there is a plethora of tablets to choose from, if you’re considering Android. You have options from affordable to expensive tablets, across various screen sizes. Android has also improved a lot in terms of design and features over the last few years. Above that, manufacturers add even more features with their added launchers. Windows

The good thing about Windows 10 is that you get the same operating system on the tablet, as the one running on a laptop or computer. The only difference being a tablet mode, which makes the interface more touch friendly. You can even get the traditional Windows 10 interface by attaching an external keyboard or mouse to the tablet and you have the option to switch to it manually. In fact, you can also use most laptop peripherals with Windows 10 tablet. It only makes sense that most Windows 10 tablets are convertibles. They also come with USB and HDMI ports. Windows tablets are great for office use with applications like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. However, the list of applications available in the Windows Store is fewer compared to Android and iOS stores.

Most Android tablets come with an expandable SD card slot, so you can always upgrade if you really need the extra space. If you’re constantly on the move and require internet connectivity, then it’s a good idea to get the cellular version. However it’ll also cost you more. If you find the need for attachments necessary, then it’s probably a good idea to get tablets that are provided with their own keyboard or stylus. It’s recommended because they work seamlessly with the device and offer more features. Tablets can be great multi-tasking machines.
