New developments to look forward to in 2012 line-up of ACs

Come summer and you will notice brand new ACs with brand new features and technologies.

Each year brings with it aspects that make operating the AC simpler, offer multiple settings of controlling the air condition within your room, widening the set of convenience features all at the simple touch of a button. While these developments make using and controlling the AC easy, what’s key is the benefits we derive from experiencing cleaner air to be able to optimize on usage and consumption costs. Let’s take a look at developments across the 3 critical components of an AC unit:
  1. Compressor
  2. Condenser
  3. Evaporator
These new developments promise to make your room cooler and your energy bills lower. So, what does this year’s line-up of ACs have to offer? When you step into any AC retail Store or flip open a brochure or catalog selling the latest 2012 ACs you are sure to come across these. Here’s looking at key developments in offerings across leading brands of ACs, and how you could benefit.

1. Filters: Typically, an Air conditioner sucks all the heat and humidity within the room and converts it into cool, pure, breathable air. The filter is part of the indoor unit (IDU) which is the evaporator. The filter is a mesh-like material that captures and holds back the bad and harmful particles such as dust that pass through it. It is also capable of removing unpleasant odours like that of cigarette and tobacco smoke, chemical and other organic smells. Across leading brands there are various types of filters employed: fiberglass based, pleated, electrostatic, HEPA, electronic.

The wide range of innovative filters used in the new line of air conditioners ensure that the air you breathe is pure and healthy. These filters work by performing two crucial functions:
a. Provide clean air:
By destroying air borne microorganisms and by removing foul odors
b. Auto-Cleaning: Comes with a self-cleaning mode that keeps them clean

a. Provide clean air: Cigarette smoke, chemical compounds and organic smells make the air unfit for breathing. These foul odors can also lead to asthma, cause allergies and other respiratory problems. Specialized filter technology enables the following:

  • Destroys air-borne microorganisms and burns down aerial dust particles, pet fur and other contaminants.
  • Sterilizes bacteria and other harmful substances in the air to constantly provide you with fresh air
  • Destroys allergens and house mites with a special enzyme
  • Comes with a special anti-bacteria coating that destroys air borne bacteria that passes through it
  • Comes with an anti-mold coating to inhibit the growth of mold in the air conditioning unit.

b. Auto-Cleaning:

  • Dust accumulated on filters needs frequent and periodic cleaning
  • Self-cleaning or Auto-cleaning technology automatically cleans the filter based on certain pre-set indicators such as no. of hours, some filters could also be manually set to go on auto-clean mode
  • A rotating brush typically cleans the dust from the filter mesh across several angles and the dust is collected in a dust bag to be emptied annually
  • Some air conditioners feature a filter cleaning indicator, which alerts when it is time to clean the filter.

2. Condenser:
  1. The condenser coil or fins (plates) are the ones exposed to outside atmospheric changes since they are a part of the outdoor unit (ODU).
  2. The condenser fins are usually made of copper or aluminium and facilitates heat transfer from the refrigerant, blown towards it by the motor-driven fan in the AC unit.
  3. When the warm air from the AC is being pushed out the condenser fins tend to get corroded.
  4. This is especially true if you reside near the sea where there is high humidity and salt in the air or in an area where there is presence of sulphur.
  5. You would notice mention of Blue Fin, Gold coated, or Pre-coated fins in general across leading brands that offer much needed protection from corrosiveness that would make your ACs last much longer and function much more effectively
3. Compressor technology:
  1. Air conditioners with DC inverter technology are more energy efficient than conventional air conditioners.
  2. AC’s without inverter-based technology work at a fixed speed to give you a set temperature irrespective of the indoor climate. The compressor in such air conditioners work on the start and stop principle. You will have to manually change the settings to get the desired cooling.
  3. On the other hand, a DC inverter automatically increases or decreases the speed of the compressor motor and fan based upon the amount of cooling required. This helps to cool the room faster.
  4. An AC with an inverter can maintain a constant indoor climate without switching itself off and without major fluctuations. It also provides steady comfort even when there are more people in the room. It also provides up to 50 % savings in energy expenditure. A reverse cycle air conditioner provides uninterrupted comfort by keeping you warm during winter and cool during summer.

From the humble ice maker that was invented to cool down the air, to the modern day air conditioning system, the air conditioner has come a long way. Leading air conditioner brands such as LG, Samsung, Daikin, Voltas, Carrier, Hitachi, Godrej and Panasonic incorporate the most advanced technologies to offer smart air conditioners that convert your home into a pure and comfortable zone.
