Technology in the form of mobile phones allows us to do a lot, and do more interactive things. Today, we can do shopping, pay bills, manage our bank accounts as well as make calls and send text messages no matter where we are. Phones are now one of our most valuable assets we have. We store critical and personal data on our phones and carry it wherever we go.   Losing a phone can be one of the biggest disasters for us. You may fall victim to identity theft if your phone is stolen, or if you forget it behind in a cab or a restaurant. Fear not! You still have a good chance of finding your lost phone. It can be your precious Android phone or tablet, an iPhone or even an iPad. We show you some of the simplest ways that could help you secure your phone from theft and also to recover it.

Make use of the phone’s security features

Most of the mobile phones today have a handful of in-built security features. These are meant to stop anyone from accessing your phone. Using a screen lock is one of the simplest things to secure your phone. Set a screen lock with a unique PIN, password or a pattern.  When creating a password, make use of letters, numbers and special characters together. Many phones today support biometric authentication as well. You can make use of a fingerprint sensor phones or facial recognition lock too, which is more secure than the traditional lock patterns.

Install Find My Phone apps

There are several phone tracking apps available which lets you track your lost phone. These apps track your phone with the help of a GPS tracker on the phone. If you find your phone missing or stolen, you can immediately call it, lock it or clear out important data remotely. Many Android phones have a built-in Android Device Manager feature that you need to enable, the first time you use it. If it is not available, you can download it from the Google Play Store. In order to track your missing phone, use a different phone or PC and access the Android Device Manager web site using a browser. Similarly, on an iPhone, this can be done by installing the ‘Find My iPhone’ app from the iTunes App Store. Using a PC or a phone, type “Find my iPhone” in the web browser or click here. Click on the “Find your missing device” option and follow the instructions to locate your device on the map.

Set a lock screen message

Setting up a lock screen message may help you get your lost phone back. These details are useful if someone finds your phone and tries calling you using the number you provide. You can add a useful message or other contact information which keeps on scrolling when your phone is locked. You can find the option to set the lock screen message in your phone’s settings menu. For example, if you are using an Android phone, go to Settings, click on the Owner info option and type in your message. If there is no such option available, you can write down your contact information on a paper and take a picture of it. You can set that picture as a lock screen wallpaper.

Backup data frequently

Storing data on our phones is a good idea. It lets us access critical data anytime we need it. Although, you can lose all of it if you lose your phone. To secure your data, make a habit of backing it up frequently. Either keep a copy of all your data on a laptop or use a secure online cloud services. Google and Apple both have cloud services, called Google Drive and Apple iCloud respectively, that can be used to store some amount of data. This makes it easy to retrieve data back safely, if needed.

Keep details of your phone

Make sure you note down details of your phone and store it safely. Include details such as your phone number, model details along with a manufacturer code which you can find on the mobile packaging box. Also remember to note down the IMEI number of your phone. You can get this 15 digit IMEI number, by simple dialing *#06# in phone’s dialer or you can also find it printed below your phone’s battery.

Claim insurance for your stolen phone

You can also register for a mobile phone insurance. If you have purchased the phone from our Reliance Digital stores or DX Mini stores, simply ask any of our store assistant and they'll help you with all the information you need.

Request for an immediate help

If you are sure that your phone is stolen, then take some immediate action. Contact your network operator and report them about the loss of your device. Give them your IMEI number, which might help them to block your phone and account details. You should also file a police report immediately. The IMEI number can act as evidence if someone tries using your phone for wrong purposes or if there is any insurance involved.

Note:

Blocking your phone will no doubt prevent it from anyone using it. Once blocked, you may not be able to use your phone again even if you get it back.

These were some of the basic things that you can do to ensure that you don’t just suffer the price of losing the phone, but more importantly the data on it.
