Reviewing: Reconnect Tablet

Two years ago, the iPad filled a computing niche that nobody – including the consumers themselves – knew existed! Since then, the tablet PC market has grown in leaps and bounds and is now one a rapidly mushrooming computing segment in the market today. When Google’s first android tablet OS - Honeycomb - came on the scene, several manufacturers jumped onto the tablet PC bandwagon and brought the tablet computer experience to the general masses. Today, everybody can own a tablet computer. And we’re not talking about some cheap rip-off; we’re talking about high-tech, miniaturized digital technology right in the palm of your hand. We’re talking about the Reconnect Tablet PC.

First impressions

At first, the Reconnect tablet PC appears to be a simple, run of the mill, tablet that nowadays fills the shelves of retailers to overflowing. A closer look reveals the smooth clean, neatly milled outlines of a well-made piece of tech. solidly constructed, the Reconnect doesn’t seem prone to the squeaks and creaks of some tablets seen in the market today.

The façade of the Reconnect is simple and is dominated by a high-resolution, 1024×600 screen that displays colors with great vibrancy. Right below are three touch-sensitive keys - the home, context submenu, and the back arrow key. We found the keys to be sturdy, functional, and responsive. Right above the screen is the 0.3MP VGA camera for video calling (yes, the Reconnect features 3G) while the back sports the 2MP shooter. Picking the Reconnect up, one gets the feeling that they’re holding a serious piece of tech; one reason for that is the weight - the Reconnect weighs in at a solid 400 grams. The other reason is that the Reconnect has great ergonomics; sized at 196×120mm, it fits into the palm of the hand like a glove. The slim profile of 11.5mm also helps get a good grip on the device. The back of the Reconnect has a non-slip matte finish - while it doesn’t look as good as a glossy one, it’s still pretty utilitarian; it provides a good grip and doesn’t behave like a fingerprint magnet. As far as looks are concerned, the Reconnect Tablet PC has that part covered - it’s suave, non-descript looks give it an understated class that other tablets struggle to capture.

Hardware and Software

The Reconnect might appear to be suave and understated, but it absolutely bristles with goodies and doodads running underneath that modest exterior. The Cortex A9 processor thrums at 1GHz and is backed up by a whopping 1 gig of DDR3 RAM. The Mali-400 GPU does a good job on the graphics intensive Android ICS OS. 1080p HD MPEG video ran just fine on the Reconnect; this tablet also features built-in HDMI. The in-built speakers sounded a little tinny, but the 3.5mm slot allows you to plug any earphones you want.

The 16:9 widescreen display is capacitive in nature and allows for multiple inputs. For wired connectivity, the Reconnect has HDMI, USB interfacing (allowing you to plug in your USB dongles, thumb drives, or USB keyboards or mice), and the standard 3.5mm connector. Wireless options are several – Bluetooth (2.1 with EDR), Wi-Fi and a SIM slot for a SIM card that lets you surf the web through a 2G/3G connection.

The Reconnect runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). The bundled software includes the Cyberlink Power DVD media player, Adobe Reader for browsing PDFs, K2Viewer for office documents, and a couple of games. It also features support for DLNA so that if you have any other DLNA devices, the Reconnect can communicate with them just fine. The Reconnect also boasts handwriting recognition so that your hastily jotted scribbles can be deciphered easily later. Unexceptional as it appears, it’s clear that the Reconnect tablet is an amazing piece of tech, with a slew of features under the hood. But features alone do not a tablet make, we always say. Read on to find out how the Reconnect did under our battery of tests.

Device Performance

With that A9 1 GHz powerhouse running the Reconnect, we found that it did a great job on our tests. Ice Cream Sandwich didn’t freeze (pardon the pun) and ran smooth as warm butter. The screen transitions from portrait to landscape and back were smooth. Touch response was good on the 7-inch screen; and we found that we were able to navigate through the OS quickly. Audio sounded flat on the built-in 1.5W speaker, but with a pair Sennheiser headphones plugged into the 3.5 mm connector, the audio pumped out was way better and had a good balance of bass and treble.

Battery life was as expected: we tested a couple of HD videos on the Reconnect tablet PC and we found that it gave nearly five hours of continuous video playback. With only audio playing, the Reconnect’s battery lasted for nearly 10 hours. Unsurprisingly, Wi-Fi use seemed to drain the battery quite quickly - heavy Wi-Fi and YouTube use shortened the battery life to nearly one third; the Reconnect lasted for only 3.5 hours. Realistically, we managed to squeeze out little more than half a day’s worth of use with some mild to moderately heavy gaming, Wi-Fi use, and touch screen brightness tuned down to a reasonable level. Overall, we felt that it performed quite satisfactorily. Charging time was around about 2 hours to top off the 3300 mAh Lithium Polymer battery.

The Reconnect’s 2MP camera was able to take reasonably good photographs. Though we found the color accuracy to be average, the picture was not too noisy. Though there was a certain amount of crispiness, the camera did capture details well - for a 2MP camera.

Memory and Storage

The Reconnect tablet PC comes with 4GB of internal storage. Data read times from the internal storage was quick enough. While we wish that the Reconnect boasted of more internal memory, it does support for up to 32GB MicroSD cards, which most users will find is sufficient for their needs.

Conclusion

Competitively priced, the Reconnect tablet PC comes across as tablet computer for the budget-conscious consumer. It features ICS, has some great features and comes with a good software bundle.
